In line with Greenwood Energy’s [GWE] regional expansion strategy to strengthen its operational capabilities and global reach, the company’s Board of Directors has announced the appointment of María Alejandra Gaona as Legal Director. In this new role, she will coordinate the legal teams across all GWE jurisdictions, ensuring a unified approach to regulatory oversight and contractual management for projects under development, construction, and operation.
Based at GWE’s office in Barranquilla, María Alejandra will continue reporting to the Country Manager for Colombia, while also supporting global strategic matters alongside the Chief Executive Officer and the Country Manager for Panama.
A lawyer specialized in Administrative Law from Universidad del Norte, María Alejandra has dedicated most of her professional career to Colombia’s renewable energy industry. With more than seven years of experience, she has built a strong track record marked by commitment, technical rigor, and meticulous execution. Before entering the renewable sector —where she contributed to consolidating a 1 GW portfolio for Grupo Desarrollos y Proyectos— she worked as a contractual law specialist in several prominent law firms in the country.
Since joining Greenwood Energy in 2024 as Legal Associate, her leadership has been essential in coordinating the legal front of GWE’s operations in Colombia. She has supported the legal structuring of projects, the negotiation of EPC, O&M, and PPA contracts, and the implementation of national energy regulations. Her key achievements include consolidating a robust legal function within GWE Colombia; contributing to the group’s global corporate structuring; leading the legal strategy that enabled the first phase of TERRɅ INITIɅTIVE to reach RTB stage; and supporting the financial close of solar projects.
According to Marcos Páez, Country Manager for Colombia, “from her very first day, María Alejandra has combined a comprehensive legal vision of the business with discipline and a strong capacity to anticipate and mitigate risks. This has significantly strengthened the secure and efficient development of our projects.”
As Legal Director, María Alejandra will lead legal processes to ensure regulatory compliance across the region; establish risk-prevention frameworks for corporate and contractual structuring; integrate legal requirements across GWE divisions; coordinate strategic legal partnerships; and advise the Board of Directors on high-level decision-making. She will also work closely with the offices in Panama and the Dominican Republic, together with their respective legal teams, to ensure regulatory compliance and the proper implementation of GWE’s corporate and financing standards.
“María Alejandra has demonstrated exceptional commitment to strengthening our legal foundations not only in Colombia but also in Panama and the Dominican Republic. Her appointment reflects her leadership, strategic thinking, and direct impact on the consolidation of our key projects,” stated Juan Pablo Crane, Chief Executive Officer of GWE.
Upon her appointment, María Alejandra shared: “Stepping into this role is an honor I accept with responsibility and humility. I reaffirm my commitment to building a legal function that supports all divisions of the company and ensures solid, reliable regional growth. My priority is to develop a preventive, strategically oriented team capable of anticipating risks and planning their mitigation with precision.”
Her leadership will also be essential in strengthening corporate governance and ensuring long-term legal sustainability through robust risk-prevention strategies, streamlined processes for internal regulatory updates, and more informed decision-making. This work will help consolidate a cycle of compliance, planning, and mitigation that reinforces operational excellence and supports Greenwood Energy’s regional growth vision.
