Panama City, Panama | December 26th, 2024
The first edition of the FusionSolar 2024 Awards took place on December 12 in Panama, where leaders in the renewable energy sector were recognized for their contributions in terms of innovation, excellence, and sustainability. Organized by the technology multinational Huawei, the event brought together more than 90 companies from the renewable industry, highlighting the most relevant projects for the Panamanian energy transition and their contribution to a cleaner and more equitable future.
In this inaugural edition, Greenwood Energy [GWE] was recognized with first place in the Excellent Developer Award category, highlighting its innovative approach to the development of solar projects, which combines technological innovation, sustainability and social development. With a special mention to ɅLMɅ MɅTER, the renewable education program developed by GWE and the University of Panama [UP], Huawei highlighted the importance of GWE’s ‘Reimagining Development’ series of projects, an initiative that is committed to transforming the energy model in Latin America. Through thoughtful solar projects, local infrastructure is strengthened, and real opportunities are created for local communities, ensuring a long-term positive impact.
ɅLMɅ MɅTER is based on a 40MWp solar project, which makes UP the first public university in Latin America to cover 100% of its electricity demand with renewable sources, thus reducing the carbon footprint of its more than 100,000 students, professors and collaborators. Additionally, the program provides scholarships, technical training and laboratory equipment, positioning UP at the forefront of renewable energy education. ɅLMɅ MɅTER also provides financial support to UP through an ‘Educational Fee’ for each kilowatt-hour generated, in addition to the transfer of the solar project after the first 20 years of operation.
“This recognition validates our vision of sustainable development and motivates us to continue moving forward. We thank Huawei for this important award. At Greenwood Energy, we work with the hope that our projects serve as catalysts for other positive initiatives around the world. We are proud to advance this mission alongside Huawei, with whom we share a strategic vision rooted in innovation, social progress and sustainability,” said Gerald Carril, Senior Vice President of Project Management, upon receiving the award on behalf of the company. According to Huawei, GWE was recognized not only for its technical innovation, but also for its leadership in driving a paradigm shift in the clean energy transition – one that goes beyond critical infrastructure to foster more balanced economic and social development. “Receiving the first place in the Excellent Developer Award crystallizes GWE’s commitment in reimagining development, showcasing our holistic approach to energy innovation and social responsibility,” Gerald concluded.
Huawei described ɅLMɅ MɅTER as “an emblematic model of sustainable development, which innovatively integrates renewable energy with education,” positioning it as a clear example of how collaboration between companies, academic institutions and local communities can generate comprehensive solutions that contribute to the consolidation of a more sustainable and inclusive future.
Greenwood Energy thanks Huawei for this significant recognition, which reflects its firm commitment to the transformation of the energy sector, where innovation and sustainability are the bases for transforming lives and realities.
